  29. 1. Introduction
  30. ================
  31. 1.1 General Information
  32. -----------------------
  33.     Release 2 and higher of the Diamond Professional Line CD adds support
  34.     for the following new software features: 
  35.     
  36.     -DirectX3, Open GL, and HEIDI for Win95
  37.  
  38.     For a complete overview of the contents of this CD, please refer to the
  39.     HTML file "Docs\Cdcont.htm".
  40.  
  41. IMPORTANT!
  42.     Read this README file and all the documentation
  43.     supplied BEFORE you continue the installation.
  44.     These documents contain useful information that will help you
  45.     complete the install procedure as quickly and easily as possible.
  46.  
  47.     Please be aware that you can use the full power of the Diamond 
  48.     FIRE GL 1000 only if the other components of your system, 
  49.     especially the graphic monitor that is being used, fully comply 
  50.     to the specifications for the Diamond FIRE GL 1000.
  51.     (For example : You cannot use the 1280x1024 resolution that is 
  52.     supported by the FIRE GL 1000 with a monitor supporting 
  53.     only resolutions up to 1024x768).
  54.     Dualscreen:
  55.     Dualscreen Hardware Support is only available with the Fire GL 2000
  56.     and 3000.

  58.        
  59. 1.2 System preparation
  60. ======================
  61.  
  62.     Follow these steps before beginning the installation procedure:
  63.  
  64.     1) If you are upgrading the graphics card in your system, return the 
  65.     display adapter settings back to 'Standard VGA', then remove the graphics
  66.     card to be replaced from your PC.
  67.  
  68.     2) Check the jumper settings on the card prior to installation in the PC.
  69.     Your board is shipped with the following jumper settings as seen from the front:
  70.  
  71.     1 2=3            = represents jumper present
  72.     1=2 3
  73.  
  74.     Refer to the online user's manual or printed documentation (if applicable) for 
  75.     a detailed description.
  76.  
  77.     3) Follow the hardware installation instructions provided with your card
  78.     before beginning the software installation.
  79.     
  80.     If you plan on installing Diamond Autocad productivity tools ( BigFocus and 3DWin ),
  81.     make sure that Autocad release 13 or higher is correctly installed first.

  83. 2. Installation
  84. ===============
  85.     The installation procedures described below refer to the
  86.     installation from the Diamond Professional Line CD and Diamond 
  87.         SuperCD. 
  88.  
  89.  2.1 Installation under Windows 95
  90. ===========================================
  91.  
  92.     Note: some versions of Windows95 delivered preinstalled on the hard disk 
  93.     of your computer may detect new graphics devices if the current display
  94.     adapter was not set to "Standard VGA" when the system was delivered. This
  95.     may also occur when the FIRE GL 2000/3000 is installed in an existing system
  96.     without returning the selected display driver to "Standard VGA" as recommended.
  97.     If the Win95 Hardware Wizard detects new graphics devices, and prompts
  98.     you for the location of graphics drivers for these devices, enter:
  99.  
  100.     <CD drive>:/DRIVERS
  101.  
  102.     and then continue with the installation. This may be required more than once.
  103.  
  104.     Otherwise, the system will start using the standard VGA driver.
  105.  
  106.         Select the Windows Start Menu and then 'Run'. Then enter:
  107.  
  108.         <CD drive>:START
  109.  
  110.  
  111.   Windows 95 Refresh Rates
  112.   -----------------------------------------------------
  113.   If your monitor is capable of displaying ergonomic refresh rates
  114.   at the resolution you have selected, but Windows95 is using a lower 
  115.   refresh rate, use the Windows95 device manager to check the following 
  116.   device properties:
  117.  
  118.   For the Fire GL 1000, make sure that the device properties entry is set to 
  119.   maximum or the specific refresh rate required.
  120.  
  121.   For the monitor, make sure the device is set to reflect the monitor you are
  122.   using, or a similar type, and make sure the properties are set to allow
  123.   using the maximum allowable refresh rate.

  126. 2.2 Installing the Windows NT 3.5/4.0 Driver
  127.     ========================================
  128.     WinNT 3.51/4.0:
  129.  
  130.     From the Windows Program Manager select 'File', then 'Run'. Enter:
  131.  
  132.     <CD drive>:START

  137. 2.3 Choosing a Monitor
  138. ======================
  139.     For using the full power of your Diamond FIRE GL 1000 board, 
  140.     the graphics monitor you choose should be technically suitable 
  141.     for use with this board.
  142.     To select refreshrates in Windows NT click on the 'Display' icon 
  143.     in the 'Control Panel'.
  144.  
  145.     For more information, please refer to your manual.

  148.          *** IMPORTANT ***
  149.  
  150.     Only use settings that your monitor supports. If you specify 
  151.     settings that exceed the ratings specified for your monitor, 
  152.     you may permanently damage the monitor!
  153.     If you change the monitor, first check the ratings of the new 
  154.     monitor and, if necessary, reconfigure your settings accordingly!
  155.

  157. 3. Known Restrictions
  158. ======================
  159.     (1) Boot problems
  160.     The Diamond Fire GL 1000, as any other graphics board, uses 
  161.     a system interrupt. 
  162.     There may be problems because of other components in your system 
  163.     using the same interrupt, or fix-installed interrupts of the 
  164.     motherboard manufacturer - (booting problems).
  165.     Please install your graphics board into another PCI slot, or, 
  166.     in the boot-setup, change the IRQ-value of the PCI slot and then 
  167.     reboot the system.
  168.  
  169.         (2) Due to a bug in the current 3DLabs Permedia chips, XOR text 
  170.         is not  displayed correctly when the Fire GL 1000 is first 
  171.         installed in VGA compatible mode. This effect is only present 
  172.         until the Fire GL 1000 drivers are installed.
  173.  
  174.         (3) Some applications (3D Studio Max, 3D-Win, OpenGL-Demos..)
  175.         support the advantage of the full hardware acceleration in True
  176.     Color and High Color video modes only. To prevent color problems,
  177.     you should switch off hardware accelaration when running in
  178.     256 color mode.
  179.  
  180.     (4) HEIDI installation. 3D Studio MAX must be properly installed on your
  181.     system AND MUST HAVE BEEN STARTED AT LEAST ONE TIME before HEIDI can be
  182.     installed using the installation procedure.
  183.  
  184.     (5) Motherboard Compatibility. The Diamond FIRE GL 2000/3000 is designed
  185.     for motherboards supporting the PCI v.2.0 (or higher) standard. This
  186.     standard supports and correctly initializes multi-function devices like
  187.     the FIRE GL 1000.
  188.     If your motherboard BIOS does not correctly identify and initialize
  189.     your graphics adapter, the software drivers proivided with the card will not
  190.     function properly.
  191.     A system BIOS update on your motherboard, available from your
  192.     motherboard manufacturer or supplier, may remedy the problem. 
  193.     Alternatively, changing the setting in the check box entitled
  194.     "Use PCI BIOS addresses" ( part of the driver properties ) may 
  195.     rectify the problem.
  196.  
  197.     (6) Bus Master Compatibility. Due to the PCI bridge design used by the
  198.     on-board Delta chip, real time video display generated via PCI Bus Master
  199.     boards may not function correctly with the Fire GL 1000.
  200.  
  201.     (7) DOS Video Mode Compatibility. The Fire GL 1000 provides limited
  202.     backwards compatibility with DOS applications at resolutions up to 640x480.
  203.     If a particular game or other application exhibits video display tearing,
  204.     the DOS utility "VBETUNE.EXE" which is included in the DOS directory on
  205.     this CD may alleviate the problem. This utility must be run once after
  206.     starting in DOS-only mode ( not Win95 DOS box ) before running the application.

  208. 4. Corrections to the Manual
  209. =============================
  210.  
  211.     Incorrect Internet browser registry settings under NT 4.0 may prevent
  212.     the online HTML documentation from being displayed. If this is the case, 
  213.     either reinstall your web browser, or execute the MS Internet Explorer 
  214.     image provided on this CD in the \DOCS\MSIE\WINNT directory.

  219.     Diamond graphic boards and multimedia products, as well as 
  220.     software updates,
